I dread this question, but I keep getting it, again and again and again…
Countries, cultures, landscapes cannot be simply compared, they are so very different. Was is better gazing down at Machu Picchu, spotting the Big 5 in the Serengeti, marveling at the Iguazu Falls, meeting remote ethnic groups in the Omo Valley in Southern Ethiopia?
True, some places mesmerized me because they are such unique highlights, others captivated me for different reasons. These are usually minor unexpected delights, encounters with local people, a stunning animals sighting or a piece of handicraft that I fall in love with. Some countries are easier to travel, others are much more challenging… True, some cultures are closer to ours and hence people seem more welcoming, and sometimes people seem more distant…
What I enjoy in traveling is the diversity of people, of ways of life, of scenery, of wildlife, of food… Moreover, the true highlights of a trip aren’t generally the ones we expected, but those that just happen, a local festival, an invitation, a chat in a park…
Some of my fellow travel bloggers do a ranking of countries visited. I have not been able to do that! Besides, traveling highlights can be experienced so very differently, what might throw you off your feet might go unnoticed by others.
