A Selection Of My Best Architecture Pictures

Taj Mahal, Agra, India

Taj Mahal, Agra, India

I sometimes use roads well traveled to discover and photograph world famous sights, like the Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat, Machu Picchu or the Golden Gate Bridge, but most of the time I try to stay Off The Beaten Track. Believe it or not, but some of the best Architecture Pictures I made were (in my opinion) not one from those unique monuments… Continue Reading →

A Selection Of My Best Landscape Pictures

Sulphure Rock Formations, Dallol, Danakil Depression, Ethiopia

Traveling through Asia, Africa & South America, I had the chance to discover and experience some of the most breathtaking Landscapes on this planet, an incredible opportunity for amazing pictures. But not all the pictures of Landscape I especially like were made in “unique places”: more often than not, the right light, the right composition, the right idea enabled me to shoot some of the nicest pictures I have ever made (in my opinion). A Selection Of My Best Portraits

Holi Festival, when Indus celebrate the beginning of Spring, by throwing coloured water and gulal (powder) at anyone within range, Bundi, Rajasthan, India

Holi Festival, Bundi, Rajasthan, India

Discovering new cultures and different lifestyles is definitely one of the highlights when traveling. For me, shooting Portraits of those different cultures too! This is all the more true since traditional ways of life are disappearing at a devastating speed, replaced by a standardized, uniformed way of life. Will we all wear the same Jeans, the same T-Shirts and the same Sneakers soon? Probably! This is also why I try to travel to more remote areas, where people still stick to their culture & traditions. Ethiopia – The Northern Historical Route: A Selection Of 51 Pictures

Bet Abba Libanos Rock-Hewn Church, Northern Cluster

Ethiopia is a stunning country that offers the largest Cultural Heritage of Sub-Saharan Africa, built over centuries by some of the oldest Jewish, Christian (Orthodox) and Muslim communities on earth, and by Empires which influence spread much further than African boundaries…

The Northern Historical Route (Bahir Dar, Gonder, Lalibela, Aksum, Tigray), in the highlands of Ethiopia, but also Harar in the East, take the visitors through the grandeurs of Ethiopian Christian Orthodox culture, with stunning Rock-Hewn Churches and Monasteries, but also through the vestiges of the various Ethiopian Empires, starting with the legendary Queen of Sheba and ending in the 20th Century. Ethiopia – The Danakil Depression: A Selection of 41 Pictures

Sunrise over the Salt Lake (Lake Asal), near Dallol

The 2 expeditions I made in the Danakil Depression (6 days in January 2011 & 5 days in November 2015) both rank amongst the most challenging and most expensive ones I have ever undertaken. But nothing, nothing will ever take away these memories: each day brought a new highlight, each minute something unseen, unique and spectacular!

Nonetheless, the Danakil Depression is no longer at the “End of the World”. It is now much easier and much cheaper to reach, and the number of tourists is increasing exponentially. Changes were already noticeable in less than 5 years… Continue Reading →

Sri Lanka – A Selection Of 47 Pictures

Woman picking tea leaves, near Ella

We spent 5 days on the Northern Cultural Triangle (Anuradhapura, Mihintale, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya & Dambulla), which was the bear minimum to be able to somehow discover those places. Then followed 3 days to get a glimpse of the Highlands and the Tea Plantations (Kandy, Nuwera Eliya & Ella). Last but not least, we headed south for one and a half day rest on the beach & whale watching in Mirissa and to discover Galle.

Here you find a Selection of 47 Pictures of Sri Lanka…

Markets Around The World – A Selection Of 40 Pictures

A Photo Essay on Markets in Africa, Asia, the Middle-East and South America

Bac Ha Sunday Market, North Vietnam

Bac Ha Sunday Market, North Vietnam

No matter where I travel, I immensely enjoy visiting markets. Many of them, especially in Africa & in Asia, but also in the Middle East & in South America, are an assault on your senses: colorful and at times disorientating, aromatic or even intoxicating, vibrant and eventually hectic places… But this is where “the real life” can be found, so different from touristic highlights (though some markets have turned extremely popular in the last years, also amongst tour groups…)

Here you find a selection of 40 pictures I took at markets in Asia (China, Myanmar, Vietnam & India), in Africa (Ethiopia & Senegal), in the Middle-East (Oman) & in South America (Colombia & Bolivia). Continue Reading →

Myanmar – A Selection Of 63 Pictures

Floating over Bagan’s 4.000 temples in a Hot Air Balloon, Bagan, Myanmar

I used every single one of the 28 days the eVisa was allowing me to stay in Myanmar in February 2015 and visited first the Southeast of the country (Golden Rock, Hpa An & Mawlamyine), before heading to the Northeast (Pyin Oo Lwin, train over the Gokteik Viaduct, Hsipaw) and finally discovered during the last two weeks the more popular and touristic part of the country (Mandalay, Bagan, Inle Lake & last but not least Yangon).
