A Selection of 82 Pictures of Costa Rica

Red-Eyed Tree Frog (Agalychnis Callidryas), Ecocentro Danaus

Costa Rica is a photographers’ dream destination, especially if you are into wildlife photography!

Beware nonetheless of two significant challenges:

  • The distance: more often than not, wildlife will be far away from you. You will hence need a strong tele-objective if you want to make descent pictures. Add to the distance the simple fact that some of the most iconic animals of Costa Rica are tiny (all those colorful frogs for instance), then your tele will be your best friend.
  • The lack of light: you will spend a lot of time in the jungle, with no sufficient light, not to mention the night tours you will want to take. A full-frame camera enabling you to switch to higher ISO sensitivities will be a significant help, as well as under-exposure to have opening times short enough to avoid blurry pictures.

An important advice: always keep an eye open and your camera with you. Some of the best photo opportunities arose at places where we wouldn’t have expected them, like the sloth near a parking lot in Puerto Viejo de Salamanca or the Ara Macaws that we observed near Manuel Antonio National Park.

All in all, I took around 4.000 pictures during those 3,5 weeks (yes, that was a challenge to sort!), kept 1.760 of them, and my Stock Photography Agency ImageBroker listed no less than 82 of them! One of the best percentages I have ever reached… probably matching the record of my first trip to the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia – At the time when I was one of two photographers who ventured into the hottest desert on this planet.
