Galtaji, better known as Galwar Bagh, the Monkey Temple, situated among Green Hravalies Hills, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India
We had not heard of this place, but a quick online research revealed it as “one of the top 10 things” to do in and around Jaipur. So why not give it a try?
We decided to go on foot from the center of the Pink City… Big mistake! How long it took us, we cannot precisely say, but we arrived quite late at the foot of the hill and were rather confused about where exactly this temple shall be. Only once we had climbed to the top, we passed two other visitors who gave us the bad news: we had to go all the ways down the hill again…

The light was already dim and along the narrow path were large groups of monkeys, often fighting each other violently. We did not even have a stick to push them back if they got too interested in us. Nevertheless, we gave it a try and trotted down the path to find charming old temples built into the rock of the narrow valley, often surrounded by pools and yes, monkeys, monkey, monkeys. Small and large ones, big baboons or females with babies on their back occupy the path, the roof, drink from a pools, they simply take over. The priests, who live in the crumbling buildings, seem to be the guardians of the creatures.
