Our friend Jamshid left his home country Afghanistan in the 1990s via Iran and has lived in Vienna since then. Learning that we were traveling to Iran he arranged a meeting with his uncle’s family in Qom. His uncle, Mr. Asghari, is a clergyman who commutes between Iran and Afghanistan, where he teaches at the University of Kabul.
The reception by Somayya, Rayhana Mohammad Ali and Zahra at their lovely home was overwhelming. We were offered the most delicious food starting with tea, cakes and sweets, to be continued with chicken, kebab, rice, salad and on the way back to the hotel we stopped for ice-cream.
